Operation Tory
Decapitation?
There seems to
have been little mention of the much hyped ‘Tory Decapitation’
strategy from the Liberal Democrats recently, and they have a
very good reason for keeping quiet: not only did the plan fail
to come off as expected; it backfired in stunning fashion.
Perhaps it was a
good campaign by the Conservatives, perhaps it was a poor
campaign by the Liberal Democrats; in reality these would both
have had some part to play in the failure of the ‘Tory
Decapitation’ strategy. The most amusing view however, might be
the most accurate: the sheer horror of the thought of a Liberal
Democrat MP drove the Conservative voters out in their
thousands.
Seeing torrents of
Liberal Democrats buzzing like yellow flies around town centres
and high streets is enough of a reminder to bring out most
Conservatives but just to be certain, they delivered twice the
liberal literature to people’s homes as an added reminder to
vote Conservative.
It turns out that
the massive efforts of the Liberal Democrats to steal the seats
of key Conservative MPs during the last election had the
paradoxical effect of increasing the Conservative vote. Rarely,
if ever, has irony been employed to such wonderful use.
